How Royal Tomb Decoration Changed
Royal tomb decoration was not fixed. Texts, images and layouts changed through the New Kingdom as funerary ideas and royal programmes developed.
Decoration had a purpose
Royal tomb walls were part of a funerary programme concerned with the king’s passage through the afterlife, protection, divine transformation and renewal. Images and texts were not added simply to make the chambers impressive.
Different compositions appear in different periods
New Kingdom royal tombs preserve several funerary compositions, including descriptions of the sun god’s nocturnal journey and regions of the underworld. The selection and placement of these texts changes across dynasties and reigns.
Architecture and decoration work together
A text in a burial chamber and the same text in a corridor do not have identical architectural context. Changes in tomb axis, chamber form and decorative programme can therefore be studied together.
Why visitors should compare tombs
Seeing two or three carefully chosen tombs is often more educational than trying to enter every open tomb. Differences in scale, colour, texts and layout become clearer when the guide gives each tomb a reason for being selected.
