Limestone, Sandstone and Granite in Ancient Egypt
The stone used in a monument reflects geology, transport, period and purpose as much as visual preference.
Limestone
Limestone dominates much of the Nile Valley from the Theban region north toward Cairo and was a major building material in the Old Kingdom and later. Giza and many northern monuments depend on this geological resource.
Sandstone
Sandstone is characteristic of southern Egypt and became increasingly important for temple construction, especially from the New Kingdom onward. Many major Upper Egyptian temples therefore have a different material character from the limestone monuments around Cairo.
Granite
Aswan was a major source of granite. Its hardness made it suitable for obelisks, columns, statues, sarcophagi and architectural elements intended to carry particular visual or structural weight. The Unfinished Obelisk gives rare direct evidence for quarrying at the source.
Stone was a logistical decision
Quarrying was only the first stage. Blocks had to be cut, moved to the Nile, transported and worked. The material of a monument therefore connects geology with labour, administration and transport. Reading the stone is one way to connect a finished temple with the wider landscape that produced it.
